Family Sweets Cooking with Setsuko – Melonpan Baking

Melonpan –  a sweet bread, made from enriched dough covered in a thin layer of crisp cookie dough. You know it, cookie dough! The name derives from its apppeance, somewhat like a small melon. It was sticky, it was hot, it was fun, and was it ever good!

Melonpan students Sierra Copner and her bachan (grandma), Elizabeth Takemura, work on their melonpan while mom and daughter, Cari, watches with interest.

As the yummy rounds rose and baked, the kitchen was filled with the fragrance of childhood memories, and everyone dug into the fresh melonpan when they were finished.

The knowledgeable people from MyGreenTea prepared and served a delicious tea to accompany the freshly baked melonpan.

If you are interested in more baking classes taught by Setsuko, she will teach one workshop on healthy 3D pumpkin cookies on Tuesday, October 23 and one on imo-yokan (a sweet potato dessert) on Saturday, November 3. For even more opportunities, please check out the Nikkei Horizons Fall Class Schedule!
